Ballot Fraud

What to Know: A West Virginia mail carrier has been charged with altering absentee (mail-in) ballot requests.

The TPPF Take: Ballot harvesting and other electoral improprieties could become even more common if efforts to mandate mail-in-ballots-for-all in upcoming elections.

“Shortly after California made ballot harvesting legal, Texas took steps to rein in the practice after many decades of experience with ‘politiqueros’ (political operatives) in the Rio Grande Valley and others areas of Texas,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “The Legislature enacted a 2017 law widening the definition of mail-in voter fraud and increasing penalties for those who commit it.”

Sticker Shock

What to Know: Higher education must adapt to the post-COVID-19 world by cutting costs and being more accessible, experts say. That’s because the shutdowns have introduced many families to less-expensive online education.

The TPPF Take: COVID-19 could spell the end of higher education as we know it.

“The consequences for traditional higher education could be profound,” says TPPF’s Tom Lindsay. “A sizable contingent of students could now be intent on obtaining an education that is less expensive, more local, more convenient, and with increased online delivery.”

Cleaner Air

What to Know: Many are claiming that the economic shutdowns have resulted in cleaner air for the U.S.

The TPPF Take: A closer look at the data shows that the shutdowns demonstrate how clean U.S. air has already become.

“Be wary about headlines implying that our environment is unsafe when our economy is not shut down, and remember that the U.S. is an unqualified success story in improving air quality while expanding our economy and energy use,” says TPPF’s Mike Nasi. “With ambient air pollution approaching natural levels, the vast majority of U.S. air is among the safest in the world.”
