A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

The King’s Birthday Honours list was announced last Friday with several city residents named. I would like to congratulate Sian Hampton of Archway Trust and Wayne Norris of the Greenwood Academy Trust who both received OBEs. I’d also like to congratulate ex-Labour Councillor and former Sheriff of Nottingham Merlita Bryan, who received an MBE for her work on the Black Achievement awards, as well as everyone one else recognised from Nottingham in the Honours List.  It is good to see the hard work of Nottingham residents to help their communities and the city recognised at a national level by the King.

Looking ahead to this weekend, Nottingham welcomes Notts Trans Pride to the city centre. I want to celebrate Nottingham’s rich diversity and we will ensure it continues to be a place where everyone feels safe, valued and connected. We are an inclusive city, committed to our values and to supporting our communities. Nottingham will continue to stand in solidarity with our transgender community and we want everyone to feel valued and confident to be their authentic selves. Nottingham is and will always be a city for all.

Finally, also this weekend is Windrush Day on Sunday 22 June. This is a chance to celebrate British Afro-Caribbean communities and to acknowledge the sacrifices and contributions the Windrush generation and their descendants have made to the UK and Nottingham. Pilgrims Church will be holding a free celebration event, including a civic event from 11.30am at Binks Yard. I would also like to take this moment to congratulate Reverend Clive Foster who was named the first Windrush commissioner by the Labour Government this week. I know he will be successful in advocating for the rights of the Windrush generation and their descendants.

clean air day

Simple steps for healthier air

Breathing in polluted air emitted from cars and other sources seriously damages health - contributing to cancers, dementia, heart disease, strokes and more.

To mark Clean Air Day which took place this week on 19 June, here are some ways you can help make a difference to our air, today, and every day.

🫁 Walk, cycle or scoot to school and cut harmful pollution at school drop-off

🫁 Take advantage of Nottingham's amazing public transport, including Nottingham City Transport's electric or biogas buses or NET Nottingham Tram electric trams rather than driving - or why not have a try at the lime e-bikes or Dott e-scooters?

🫁 If you need to drive, ALWAYS turn off your engine when waiting, especially if you have children in the car. People inside a car breathe in MORE harmful air pollution than walkers or cyclists, so always switch off when possible, especially when there are children in the car

🫁Are you a local business, charity or organisation in Nottingham? Did you know we have grants available that can help you green your business travel - including help to install EV chargers as well as pool e-bikes for your business, showers and changing facilities and secure bike shelters

A new planning document has been formally approved which will help developers to construct environmentally-friendly homes and buildings.

Senior councillors on Nottingham City Council’s Executive Board gave the green light to the Reduction of Carbon in New Development Supplementary Planning Document (Carbon SPD) on Tuesday afternoon (17 June).

Developed in partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council, it will help raise the profile of the global climate crisis and encourage those companies building in Nottingham to support lower carbon use and long-term costs.

Drowing Prevention Week

Nottingham Swim School Supports National Drowning Prevention Week campaign

Nottingham Swim School, part of Nottingham City Council, urges parents to ensure their children know how to stay safe and enjoy the water this summer. Whether traveling abroad or staying local, the Royal Life Saving Society UK warns that families may visit beaches and inland waters without considering potential dangers, putting themselves at risk. Those using non-lifeguarded pools are especially vulnerable without proper water safety skills.

During Drowning Prevention Week (14-21 June 2025), Nottingham Swim School has been highlighting the importance of water safety through engaging activities from the Royal Life Saving Society. Participants will receive an email certificate at the end of the week to celebrate their progress.

Additionally, Nottingham Swim School is offering a special discount on swimming lessons during Drowning Prevention Week where new members can join for free and won't pay anything until 5 July 2025*. This offer is available at Active Nottingham leisure centres by quoting DPW2025 to a team member.

Visit https://www.activenottingham.com/drowning-prevention-week/ to find out more about the campaign, offer and also access free water safety resources. *Terms apply.
