John,
Today, we celebrate Juneteenth – the end of slavery in the United States. This year, it’s an especially emotional celebration for so many who still face persecution and injustice because of the color of their skin.
155 years have passed, but our progress has been painfully slow. We’ve seen promising growth – like the election of our first Black President in Barack Obama. We’ve also seen some of our nation’s worst elements spouting their hateful views out in the open – emboldened by a racist President.
Now, following the murder of George Floyd, it seems the stage is set for significant change and a sustained effort to realize the progress we so desperately need.
Today we celebrate the progress we’ve made and the people who’ve made it happen – tomorrow we get back to work making sure that America lives up to its promise of being a fair and equal place for all. I’m committed to fighting for the changes we need, and I hope you’ll join me.
