Counseling That Saves Lives

We’re sharing a new resource for clinicians who want to discuss safe firearm storage and more with their patients. Lethal means safety counseling enables health care professionals to work alongside their at-risk patients and their families to find solutions that temporarily reduce access to guns.

Our new webpage gives evidence-based reasonings on why lethal means safety counseling is both important and effective. Clinicians have a critical opportunity to engage at-risk patients and support them in temporarily limiting access to firearms during periods of elevated risk. Studies show that 82% of adolescent firearm suicides involve an unsecure firearm belonging to a family member. Discussing safe storage options with at-risk patients can help mitigate firearm access during a time of crisis.

Check out the Center’s new webpage for more information on how lethal means counseling can save lives.
