We’re touching grass!

We all know that the best time to launch a TikTok is a full year after Congress passes a bill to ban the app from the United States. But as long as TikTok remains on your phone, you can go ahead and dismiss that screentime reminder you hopelessly set up last month and check out our new page!

This week, we went into the field to ask folks in Madison, Wisconsin, what they think of the Democratic Party. And tracking with our national polling on perceptions of the Democratic Party, the people we talked to weren’t too confident in Democratic leadership or how the party is standing up to Trump.

Some responses when we asked who they see as the current leader of the Democratic Party: “I don’t know,” “I have no clue,” and “I don’t think we have a set one right now.” Not great!

One thing we know for sure — whoever wants to be the next Democratic Party leader needs to reach voters where they’re at, and increasingly that includes digital platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

So, in between videos of Dubai Chocolate recipes or Gracie Abrams propaganda, you can now get a quick dose of public opinion from Data for Progress, and hopefully soon, more progressive voices.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

We’re here, we're queer, get used to it!

This week, the Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, and unfortunately, the musty conservatives on the Court also recently decided to take up a case challenging the constitutionality of Colorado’s ban on “conversion therapy” for next term.

Thankfully, public opinion is not on the side of what The Trevor Project refers to as “dangerous, discredited, and unscientific practices.”

After being informed of the term “conversion therapy” and provided with a description, including the fact that it is opposed by LGBTQ+ advocates, our poll finds that a strong majority of voters (60%) say they are opposed to the practice.

Anyone who has ever met a queer person knows that they can’t be changed — they were born that way, baby! Maybe we should try teaching kids to love themselves and others, and not encourage parents to send their kids off to adults who peddle in unethical pseudoscience.

Lighting our cash on fire…

There are a lot of things we’re down to waste our money on — extra pearls in our boba tea, Ticketmaster’s “service fees,” and more toys for our pets because they are good boys and girls who totally deserve it. Paying more money because some oil companies decided to lie about the reality of climate change for years? Not one of them.

Over the next few decades, consumers can expect to pay more in food prices due to the impact of climate change, while homeowners could see their home values decrease in areas impacted by natural disasters. Not to mention rising energy and home insurance costs.

When asked whether they believe climate change will have a direct financial impact on them and their family, a majority (58%) of likely voters say it will impact them either greatly or somewhat.

Voters also rank rising costs as one of the top reasons for politicians to address energy and environmental issues. Because “global disasters” should truly not be part of anyone’s long-term financial planning!
