I have been at a loss for words as the details of last weekend’s tragic and senseless murders of Speaker-Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted murders of Senator John Hoffman and his wife continue to unfold.

 

Like you, I was shocked to hear the news and sickened that someone turned to violence to target people he disagreed with.

 

There is no place for political violence in our society, and we are seeing far too much of it throughout this country. We must be able to disagree respectfully, and the nature of this intolerable act can never be accepted as normal.

 

My heartfelt condolences to the Hortman family. My family is praying for them to find peace, as well as the Hoffman’s in hopes they will make a speedy recovery. And a thank you to law enforcement across this state for quickly locating this assassin and apprehending him.

 

It feels fitting to conclude this legislative update with a memorable exchange that my wife, Joni, and I shared with Speaker Emerita Hortman on the morning of January 14th, that contentious first day of the 2025 legislative session. As we rode up the elevator during such a challenging and controversial time, I felt compelled to ask her how she was holding up. Her heartfelt response struck a chord with me, and in retrospect, it carries great significance: “I’m just praying for peace,” she said.

 

Her words will remind us all of the importance of seeking calm and understanding amidst the chaos of our responsibilities. It’s my hope that her killer receives his due justice – and quickly.
