Rohingya refugees like Nur, pictured above with her daughter, urgently need your help. In crowded camps like those in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, where Nur has lived for almost three years, social distancing during COVID-19 has been impossible. Recent weather events have destroyed farms and crops, making it difficult to get food.
"It's tough to live inside these tents," Nur said, "We cannot go to market to buy our essential items...we cannot buy what we need."
Tomorrow is World Refugee Day, a day marked every year to recognize and celebrate the courage and resilience of refugees. Your help is urgently needed for families like Nur's and other vulnerable people fleeing violence and persecution worldwide.
Thanks to a member of Oxfam America's Leadership Council, we're matching the first $15,000 raised dollar-for-dollar. Give now in honor of World Refugee Day – your matched gift can have double the impact. Your gift will go toward efforts like installing handwashing stations in Cox's Bazar, addressing the drivers of forced migration, and fighting poverty around the world.
Thanks to the support of the Oxfam community, Oxfam has been helping Rohingya refugees like Nur in camps like those in Cox's Bazar for years – since thousands of Rohingya were forced to leave their homes in 2017. During COVID-19 and Cyclone Amphan, we've been installing contactless handwashing stations and promoting hygiene practices.
"We are not afraid. We know how to wash hands, how to be safe," Nur said after attending a hygiene awareness session. Refugees like Nur are courageous and resilient, doing their best to stay healthy under hazardous circumstances. But they need more support.
Your matched gift will have an enormous impact. Your commitment will help those fleeing persecution and living in poverty worldwide, through programs like building handwashing stations in refugee camps in Bangladesh, slowing the spread of COVID-19 in dozens of countries, addressing the drivers of forced migration through campaigns to reduce gender-based violence in El Salvador, and other initiatives across the globe. Make a donation for World Refugee Day and it will be matched.
Thank you for standing up for the most vulnerable.
Sincerely,
Abby Maxman
