John,
Today, we honor Juneteenth, a day that represents the end of slavery, the triumph of freedom, and the enduring strength, spirit, and resilience of Black Americans. Today is the anniversary of the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston Bay, Texas, freeing 250,000 people from slavery, more than two years after President Lincoln made the decree.
While we celebrate the fight for freedom and justice, today also serves as a reminder that our work is far from over.

We are incredibly grateful for and inspired by the leadership of Black leaders in Colorado, like Congressman Joe Neguse, CU Regent Wanda James, Senate President James Coleman, Assistant Majority Leader Jennifer Bacon, State Senator Tony Exum, and State Representatives Michael Carter, Regina English, Jamie Jackson, Junie Joseph, and Naquetta Ricks. And, we recognize that Colorado would not be what it is without the service of honorable elected officials who charted a path forward such as Mayor Wellington Webb, Representative Wilma Webb, Councilmember Elbra Wedgeworth, and the first African American Speaker of the House, Terrance Carroll, among many others. This Juneteenth, we’re asking you to consider donating to organizations that are working to protect freedom and advance equal opportunity for all. |
