Earlier this year, my office led a multistate coalition in a lawsuit
against the Trump administration for unlawfully canceling public health
research grants — and this week, a federal judge ruled in our favor,
restoring the grants and getting life-saving research back on track while
our case proceeds.
These weren’t budget cuts. They were discriminatory attacks on projects
Trump doesn’t like, including ones focused on racial equity, LGBTQ+
health, and vaccine access. The cuts put life-saving research that impacts
vulnerable communities in serious jeopardy.
This week, a Republican-appointed judge called out the Trump
administration’s actions as discriminatory and unlawful — in fact, he
called it “one of the clearest cases of discrimination he’s seen in four
decades on the bench.”
Now, thanks to our efforts, those terminated research grants are being
restored — so California institutions can get back to curing disease and
saving lives.
This ruling is a step forward for science, for justice, and for the
diverse communities who rely on this medical research. And it’s a reminder
that when we fight back, we can win.
This decision is particularly meaningful coming in the week of Juneteenth
— a time to reflect on freedom and equality for all people, especially the
Black community who has long been overlooked, undervalued, and
systematically discriminated against. Not just in law, but in health,
opportunity, and access.
I’m more committed than ever to using the law to protect and support
marginalized communities and hold those in power accountable.
