Friend -
Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of remembrance and a joyful celebration of freedom for Black Americans across the country.
On this day, 160 years ago, after a long and bloody Civil War, the last enslaved people were told that they had finally been freed. That day was only the beginning of a decades-long struggle for civil rights, even as those newly freed people began to build the America they dreamed of, establishing schools, fostering and inspiring arts and culture, and fighting for their civil rights.
In the spirit of that long struggle, Senate Democrats continue the fight for a Washington that lives up to the promise of our nation: a people indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Our Senators continue to prioritize the Black community as they make record investments addressing the housing affordability crisis, increasing funding for public and special education, and making our communities safer through gun violence prevention.
On the 160th anniversary of this momentous day, we’re reflecting on our long history and recommitting to our mission: a better and more equitable Washington.
