On this day in 1865, news of freedom finally reached the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas. But 160 years later, the fight for “absolute equality” is far from over—especially with Trump back in the White House and erasing progress for Black Americans in real time. Hi John! Justice here from the Voter Protection Project.
Growing up in Houston—so close to where Juneteenth started—I remember the celebrations: food, music, and community. For us, it was more than a holiday. It was about honoring where we come from and how far we’ve come as Black Americans.
But this year, Juneteenth feels different.
Juneteenth honors Black liberation—but Trump and his MAGA allies are actively dismantling racial equity across government. Here’s how they’re doing so:
They’re gutting federal DEI programs—firing staff, eliminating equity offices across agencies, and scrubbing protections meant to combat systemic racism.
They’re defunding education support— freezing aid to HBCUs and threatening access to education for Black students.
They’re slashing healthcare—gutting Medicaid and the ACA, hitting Black families the hardest.
They’re weakening civil rights enforcement—dropping key DOJ cases and redirecting resources to attack diversity initiatives.
They’re erasing Black history—removing names like Medgar Evers from federal buildings.
They’re abandoning environmental justice—dropping pollution probes in Black communities and handing power to industry insiders.
These attacks aren’t just cruel—they’re calculated. Trump’s agenda is about maintaining power by silencing marginalized people, including Black Americans.
That’s why the Voter Protection Project is on the frontlines, working to elect Democrats who will fight for true equality. Can you chip in $7 today to help us fight back against Trump’s dangerous agenda? » [link removed]
