Lauren Underwood For Congress

John,

Today, as we commemorate Juneteenth, I am reminded of the profound significance this day holds. It's a moment to reflect on our journey and to celebrate freedom — a journey marked by resilience, strength, and hope.

Four years ago, I had the honor of being at the White House when President Biden signed the legislation recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. It was a powerful reminder that while our past is marked by the struggle for equality, our future shines bright with possibility.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their long-awaited freedom. This monumental day was a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and though the road ahead was fraught with challenges, the drive for progress never waned.

Our ancestors' perseverance paved the way for remarkable achievements, from the Civil Rights Act of 1866 to the 15th Amendment. Their stories of courage inspire us to continue the fight for justice and equality for all.

I come from a long line of leaders and advocates. My dad's family comes from the Jim Crow South. My mom's family comes from the steel mill towns of Pennsylvania. Our family is large and loud, loving and loyal. My ancestors and elders may not have had fancy titles, but their determination, deep faith, brilliance, and hard work left a legacy of service that I am honored to carry on.

In the 14th District, we've made significant strides. We've created millions of jobs, advanced American manufacturing, and brought critical infrastructure improvements home to Illinois.

Yet, challenges remain. Communities across the country are standing up and speaking out against injustice as the Trump administration works to disappear people off the streets and has unjustly deported American citizens.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, I feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to serve you. Your resilience, vision, and spirit empower our community. We stand on the legacy of those who came before us, carrying forward the torch of freedom and equality.

Thank you for your support and for being a beacon of hope.

Happy Juneteenth!

Lauren
