John, Today we celebrate Juneteeth, also known as “Freedom Day,” because it honors the emancipation of the remaining enslaved African Americans of the Confederacy. Juneteeth also serves as an important reminder that we must continually support Black Lives Matter and push for systemic change from our elected officials. This is the moment to act. We need representatives who have the guts to address our history head-on. I have called for police reform that ends qualified immunity, demilitarizes the police force, bans chokeholds, and eliminates no-knock warrants. I also support the New York City Council's recommendation to take $1 billion out of the police budget to invest in community services like mental health first responders. Police reform is only one part of this movement. There is an opportunity for everyone to make an impact in their own communities and workplaces. And I hope that everyone does — this is a time to step up, not a time to opt-out. All my best, |
