Today is an important day.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to finally enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that “all slaves are free.”
Each year, Juneteenth is a day to celebrate Black resilience and joy. It is a reminder of just how long Black people across this country have been fighting for true equality.
It’s also a time to acknowledge that the fight for justice and equality is ongoing. The history of enslaved people in our country created a legacy of stark injustices and systemic racism that communities still grapple with today. It is on all of us to continue addressing these lingering inequities each and every day.
This year especially, Juneteenth takes on a renewed meaning. We must stand up, join together, and create a brighter future where everyone can thrive in America no matter the color of their skin.
As a proud member of the Pueblo of Laguna, I know how important it is to face the reality of our past and commit ourselves to building a more just and equitable future for all.
