** Why We Commemorate June 19th as a Federal Holiday
------------------------------------------------------------
June 19, 1865 is the date news of emancipation finally reached 250,000 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas — long after the Emancipation Proclamation was announced by President Abraham Lincoln on Sept. 22, 1862.
Why do we remember this day in our nation's history? Fulfilling the American dream of freedom for ALL is a journey that requires persistence and determination. We can learn and take inspiration from those who hoped for and fought for freedom – especially now as we face new challenges to our rights and democracy.
Honor this day by joining your community in events listed
