Happy Juneteenth!

On this day in 1865, Union soldiers arrived at the last stronghold of the Confederacy with the news that President Lincoln had decreed all enslaved African Americans to be free. While the Emancipation Proclamation technically went into effect in 1863, it took more than two years for the news to reach all parts of the country.

Today, we celebrate emancipation and freedom, and honor the countless courageous civil rights activists and leaders who have fought for freedom in the face of prejudice and oppression. We are reminded that our freedoms must be actively defended if they're to remain a reality — an important reminder in today’s world.

I believe it is our duty to meet this moment with the same courage, conviction, and moral clarity as the generations before us. To listen, to learn, and most importantly, to act.

Let’s celebrate today with joy and recommit ourselves to the struggle for justice that endures.
