Hi John,
On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. This day marked the true beginning of freedom for many, and after 156 years, it was rightly recognized as a national holiday, Juneteenth, by President Biden.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the broad history of Black Americans, which includes the horrors and injustices of slavery and the liberation of individuals who helped build this country and democracy. It is now more important than ever to continue to hold it accountable to the sacred words and ideals of the Constitution.Today, like all days, it is the responsibility of all of us to hold this country to its promise of life, liberty and happiness.
There is the enduring legacy of inequality that still denies Black Americans full justice and opportunity. But there is also the immense possibility of progress when we leverage the power of the people to organize, legislate, and lead with equity, respect and love at the center.
As a Connecticut Democrat, I’m proud that our work reflects our commitment and awareness that we can celebrate how far we’ve come, but continue to organize and fight for more accessible voting rights, and invest in education, childcare, and health care. Our work is rooted in the belief that true freedom means real, lived opportunity for all.
Look for one of the many Juneteenth events taking place across the state to celebrate, reflect, and connect with one another.
Onward,
Adrienne Billings-Smith
Vice Chair
