Dear AFGE Activist,

One June 19th we commemorate a pivotal moment in American history. This date in 1865 marked the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas and more broadly, the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans throughout the Confederate South.

Juneteenth, as it has come to be known, is a day of joy and celebration, but also of reflection and remembrance. It is a time to honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans. This is a time to reaffirm our commitment to fight against systematic injustices that still persist.

As a union, AFGE has always been on the forefront of advocating for equality and fairness. We believe in the dignity and worth of every worker.

Today, let's remember that the fight for civil rights and workers' rights are interconnected. Let's celebrate the progress we've made, but also be mindful of the work still ahead of us.

Let's honor the legacy of those who came before us by continuing to stand up for equality and justice, not just in our workplace, but in our communities across the nation.

May you have a meaningful Juneteenth.

In Solidarity,

Everett Kelley, AFGE National President
Eric Bunn, Sr., AFGE National Secretary-Treasurer
Kendrick Roberson, AFGE NVP for Women and Fair Practices
