Big,

Juneteenth marks the day — June 19, 1865 — when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed that they were free. More than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

That’s the story of Juneteenth. Freedom announced, but not delivered. Promised, but delayed. And that delay was no accident. It was the system doing exactly what it was built to do: protect power, protect capital, and keep Black people waiting.

160 years later, we’re still being told to wait.

Wait for voting rights.
Wait for Justice.
Wait for schools to not be made to erase history.
Wait for air we can breathe, water we can drink, lives we can live freely.

But we’re not waiting anymore. Because Juneteenth doesn’t just mark the end of slavery — it reminds us that the struggle didn’t end in 1865. It continued through Jim Crow, through redlining, through voter suppression, through mass incarceration, through every policy and power structure that tries to silence us today.

So, we’re not here to whitewash this history with platitudes. Juneteenth is a celebration, yes. But it’s also a call to action. Because freedom here has never been handed over. It’s been fought for, taken, over and over again.

And every time they tell us to quiet down, to be patient, to wait our turn — we remember the generations who never had the luxury of waiting.

So yes. Today is a celebration. One of resilience, of survival, of community. Today is also a moment to recommit. To organizing. To telling the truth. To building power that serves all of us, not just the privileged few.

Not just on Juneteenth. But for every day forward.

In remembrance, resistance, and resolve,
