John,
As we gather to honor Juneteenth, I’m reminded of the powerful moment on June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally heard the news of their freedom. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued two years earlier, it was on this day that the promise of liberty reached every corner of our nation.
This fight for freedom is a call to action that resonates profoundly today. In just the first five months of this Trump term, we've faced dramatically increasing efforts to roll back voting rights, erode civil liberties, and deepen systemic inequities. Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that even after 160 years, our liberties must be defended every single day.
Black communities and vulnerable people nationwide continue to encounter barriers that contradict our nation's founding ideals. We face modern forms of poll taxes, voter suppression laws and tactics, and economic challenges that restrict opportunity. We can’t sit and watch these injustices unfold. Every decision made and action taken this year will echo into our children’s futures.
With a pivotal election on the horizon, I urge you to join me in channeling our shared commitment into action. Volunteer your time and talent. Raise your voice at your local town hall. Cast your vote for leaders committed to expanding — not eroding — freedom. Only by working together can we dismantle the obstacles that hold us back. , wJohne are not truly free until everyone is.
This Juneteenth, let us honor those who came before us by fighting for a more just tomorrow. Let's ensure North Carolina continues moving toward true equality for all. Here's to our progress, persistence, and the day when every American can unequivocally declare their freedom.
Sincerely,
Wiley
