John,
Juneteenth signaled the effective end of slavery in the United States. On
June 19, 1865 Union troops finally arrived in Galveston, Texas to share
the news of emancipation. Though the true end of slavery didn’t come until
the 13th amendment was ratified, newly freed people in Texas began
celebrating Jubilee Day or Juneteenth the following year to commemorate
the day.
Juneteenth is a day of remembrance. A day of reflection. A day of joy. But
most of all, it’s a day to recommit ourselves to the fight for racial
justice.
With Donald Trump back in the White House, banning DEI and removing Black
History content from federal websites, it is more important than ever that
we commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth today.
We know that real liberation means affordable housing, environmental
justice, health care for every person, and investment for our communities
— as budgets are reflections of values. The Squad is fighting for that
future — with policy, organizing, and bold leadership.
Happy Juneteenth. Black lives matter. Black joy matters. Black futures
matter.
In solidarity,
Squad Victory Fund
