Happy Juneteenth, friends!

160 years ago to the day, Black Americans in Galveston, Texas became free — nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Although the Civil War ended months earlier, enslavers in Texas continued to hold Black people in bondage well after — that is, until the 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston with news of freedom.

Since then, Juneteenth represents a day to celebrate the Black experience in our country and reflect on the journey towards equality. And while Juneteenth is a celebration of our ancestors' fight, it’s also a reminder to continue their legacy and ensure that, now and for generations to come, Black people can fully embrace freedom in America.

In the years that followed emancipation, Black people across the country were still met with Jim Crow era laws that stripped away their rights and freedoms. Tactics like poll taxes, literacy tests, and violent intimidation made it harder for Black Americans to vote and make their voices heard in our democracy.

In today’s America, the far-right engage in eerily similar tactics, including blatantly coordinating efforts to silence voters and suppress the vote of Black and brown communities.

Bigoted lawmakers place hurdles between Black voters and the ballot box because they’re afraid of losing their power once Black Americans are able to fully use theirs.

In honor of the freedom fighters who came both before and after June 19, 1865, let us continue to prevail. Their legacy lives on in Fair Fight’s work, and in our modern-day movement to protect the right to vote and hold anti-voter extremists accountable.

In solidarity,

Dr. Carol Anderson
