# [#]John,
Happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth honors the first time all African Americans were free in this country. Federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on this day in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed, a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African-American holiday, and is a day to celebrate the countless achievements of the Black community across our nation.
Today is also as a reminder that Pennsylvania and the United States have more work to do to shed the bonds of institutional racism and grapple with our difficult history. We’re still battling the shameful legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, housing segregation, voter suppression, access to health care, and life expectancy.
We must recognize the unique inequities that Black Americans face in our nation and recommit ourselves to taking action together. The road ahead will not be easy, but I know a better world is possible.
Thank you,
Kenyatta
