Today we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
It's Juneteenth.
Today we commemorate the official end of slavery in the United States — a defining moment in our nation’s continuing journey toward justice and equality for everyone.
Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the hard-won progress that generations of Black Americans have fought for and a moment to acknowledge the work that remains.
The promise of freedom delivered on June 19, 1865, was historic, but the struggle for equity and opportunity continues to this day. We must keep fighting for these ideals.
When I voted to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021, I did so knowing that symbolic progress must be matched with real action. This day reminds us of our shared responsibility to confront injustice, reject racism in all its forms, and build a future where everyone has a fair shot — regardless of their race, background, income, or zip code.
Let us honor this day not just with remembrance but with purpose. Together we can build a more perfect union rooted in equality, dignity, inclusion, and freedom for all of us.
