Dear John,

As the dust settles from another important election here in Virginia, I want to take a moment to speak from the heart to our vibrant and resilient Muslim community.

This election season has been filled with energy, dedication, and purpose. We have witnessed history being made, voices being uplifted, and communities coming together for a brighter future. Today, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to our endorsee Jay Jones on his inspiring victory. His leadership and commitment to justice and equity will no doubt serve the Commonwealth with strength and integrity.

We also take this moment to recognize Babur Lateef for running a thoughtful and principled campaign. His voice continues to be an important part of Virginia's civic fabric, and his work, both past and ongoing, reflects the values of service, compassion, and representation that we hold dear.

In 2019, Senator Ghazala Hashmi became the first Muslim woman elected to the Virginia State Senate, her continued presence is not just a source of pride, it’s a powerful testament to the progress we have made together and the road that still lies ahead. Ghazala famously used the phrase, “Ghazala Hashmi is an American name,” during her 2019 campaign to highlight her identity and experience as an American. On Tuesday night, Ghazala proved that “Ghazala” is not just an American name, but a Virginia name. Her leadership continues to inspire so many, especially young Muslims seeking role models in public service. Her leadership is an inspiration to so many, especially young Muslims looking for role models in public service. These outcomes are more than political wins, they are reflections of the strength, engagement, and diversity of our communities. They are a reminder that when we organize, speak up, and vote, we help shape the future of Virginia for the better.

Let us carry forward this spirit of civic engagement with unity and purpose. Regardless of the outcome of individual races, our collective work continues. Let’s continue to show up for one another, support one another, and build a Commonwealth where every voice is heard and every family feels they belong.

Let us come together and support our sister through the finish line this November. It is a long road ahead and we will watch an increase in Islamophobic and anti-palestinian rhetoric. It is imparative that we stand tall, together. Please consider investing in our movement!

With gratitude and hope,

Mohamed Gula, Virginia State Director
