Happy Juneteenth, John!
I know many of you are spending today with friends, family, and community to reflect and rejoice.
Juneteenth is more than just a day off: It’s a day for honoring Black history, Black joy, and Black perseverance. On June 19, 1865 — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation — the last enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally freed.
The United States was built on the labor and sacrifice of enslaved Black men, women, and children, and this history cannot be separated from the progress we fight for today.
I had the honor of being in the room when Juneteenth was officially made a federal holiday. That moment, standing beside leaders, elders, and advocates who never gave up, will stay with me forever…but our work didn’t end there. Juneteenth reminds us of the power of our resolve and the richness of our culture. It’s also a call to action — to keep pushing for a country that delivers on the promise of liberty and justice for all.
So today, as we celebrate, let’s also recommit to the movement, to the memory, to the mission of true equality for every American.
I hope you’re taking time to celebrate safely and joyfully.
With hope and resolve,
Dwight
