Disabled New Yorker Speaks Out Against Assisted Suicide Bill

 

Dovie Eisner, a disability advocate, wrote, "My situation as someone with serious physical disabilities may be unusual. But most everyone has dealt with the byzantine bureaucracy of insurance companies and medical billing. Do we really want to make physician-assisted suicide a legitimate form of 'treatment' in end-of-life cases?"

A CALL TO ACTION

In April, the New York State Assembly passed, by a close vote of 81-67, dangerous and discriminatory assisted suicide legislation. During the last week of session, on Monday, June 9th, the New York State Senate approved assisted suicide by a vote of 35-27. A slim majority over the necessary 32 votes for passage. The bill will now head to the desk of Governor Kathy Hochul, who needs to hear from YOU. Click the link below to tell the Governor to VETO this bill!

The UK Must Prevent Assisted Suicide This Week

Gordon Brown, former UK Prime Minister, states, "I understand the often-cited case for assisted dying – that we should not deny terminally ill people the freedom to choose. But there is no effective freedom to choose if the alternative option, the freedom to draw on high-quality end-of-life care, is not available. Neither is there real freedom to choose if, as many fear, patients will feel under pressure to relieve their relatives of the burden of caring for them, a form of coercion that prioritising good end-of-life care would diminish."

Alexander Chula, a junior doctor in the UK, "Things that make life worth living might be fewer, smaller, constrained by disease, but are no less real for that. They can be degraded, however, by the implicit judgements of others: if enough people in the same situation decide they’re better off dead, belief in the value of your own life becomes harder to sustain, in ways the healthy can scarcely imagine."
