AMERICA is under attack — again.
The culprit? Surprise, surprise: China.
Two Chinese nationals were recently arrested for smuggling a toxic crop-killing pathogen into the United States. The noxious fungus also leads to reproductive defects in humans and livestock. Making matters worse, the alleged agroterrorists have been bringing the pathogen into the U.S. as far back as August 2022.
Chinese officials claim no knowledge of the situation. You would be foolish to believe them.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, at least one of the Chinese nationals is a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). She received funding from the Chinese government for her research on the pathogen — and its potential for terrorism. The other (her boyfriend) works at a Chinese university, conducting research on the same pathogen.
While China plans attacks from afar, we have been playing catch-up at home. Under the Biden administration, then-National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan coordinated the White House’s China policy over four years. Sullivan repeatedly met with CCP officials to foster “bilateral alliances.” Xi Jinping even talked up US-China “traditional friendship” with Sullivan.
Between 2017 and 2020, Sullivan worked at the consulting firm Macro Advisory Partners, advising foreign governments and companies on penetrating the U.S. market. The firm proudly touts its work for businesses with footprints in China — under the watchful eye of the CCP — although Sullivan has always played down his consulting work.
Nor was Sullivan’s boss in the White House some China hawk. Between Joe Biden’s time as vice president and president, his think tank, the Penn Biden Center — received at least $61 million from Chinese individuals and entities.
The newest advance guard from China? A massive CCP-linked company seeking a foothold in America’s water supply. Nashua is the first city to grant a domestic water contract to Nongfu Spring, with Nongfu announcing plans to expand aggressively in America by gaining access to our tap water for bottling operations.
You might expect our congressional delegation to question the decision. But don’t expect much from Rep. Maggie Goodlander, D-NH, whose district includes Nashua and who also happens to be Jake Sullivan’s wife.
Goodlander is intent on criticizing Trump’s China tariffs and Trump’s revocation of visas for Chinese students. Concern over selling access to our water supply? Crickets. Our two New Hampshire senators are more concerned with celebrating Pride Month and peddling gun control, while Nongfu hijacks the Nashua local utility.
Nongfu’s $67 million purchase of 23 acres and an industrial building was cleverly timed for last January 31. On that dead zone date, the Biden team was out of office, while Trump staffers were still looking for their new desks. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) — our federal watchdog on Chinese investments in the U.S. — was inoperable.
The Chinese already own controlling interests in thousands of American companies. Hopefully, CFIUS will exercise its power to abrogate this contract that potentially threatens our national interests. Any company subject to CCP influence that has access to America’s food or water supply ought to qualify for debarment.
Sen. Kevin Avard, R-Nashua, represents District 12 and chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
