Hi friend,

Most people in debt won’t admit to it. We’re scared of what our friends or family will think. We hide away in shame and isolation. But over the years I’ve realised something important: when we speak up, we are powerful.

I’m Jo, from Greater Manchester, and I want to share my journey with you, because no one should be ashamed for struggling at a time when the cost of living is high, when jobs are insecure, and housing is precarious.

As someone who has experienced the threat of bailiffs turning up at my door, I can tell you – the fear and insecurity stays with you.

I had a three year old at home and didn’t want strangers turning up at my door, taking my stuff. I didn’t even know what a bailiff was! I ended up going to court, which was completely alien to me. It was absolutely terrifying.

Did you know that if you miss a council tax bill, the council can charge you a fine for the whole year? And on top of that, they can send in the bailiffs.

A third of people in council tax debt are in poverty, half are behind on their rent, half have mental health problems, and a quarter are skipping meals because they can’t afford to buy food.

This is why I have joined the Debt Justice campaign to Ban the Bailiffs. No one should have to experience what I went through, and if enough of us act, we can stop this archaic practice.

Thank you so much for hearing my voice. Together we can make sure bailiffs are a thing of the past.

In solidarity,

Jo Barker, from Greater Manchester and the Debt Justice team
