Dear Reader:
I want to share something that doesn’t happen every day in journalism — Broad + Liberty just won two major court decisions in our battle to hold the Shapiro administration accountable.
Over the last year, we filed multiple Right-to-Know requests asking for documents related to a sexual harassment scandal that drove a top official from Governor Shapiro’s cabinet. The Governor’s Office claimed they had nothing to disclose — or worse, that what they did have was too privileged for the public to see.
We didn’t accept that. We took them to court.
And we won.
A Commonwealth Court judge recently ruled that the Shapiro administration improperly withheld key records, including emails sent by the very official at the center of the scandal. The court also agreed with us on a critical point: that high-ranking government officials cannot automatically shield their communications from public review just because of their title.
This was a victory not just for Broad + Liberty, but for every Pennsylvanian who believes in honest, transparent government.
But these wins come at a cost. Filing lawsuits, challenging denials, and pursuing appeals takes real time and money. While some outlets chase clicks, we chase accountability — and the process isn’t cheap.
