We’re writing today with an urgent update.

Last night, we received notice that on July 17, the federal administration will shut down the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialized Services ([link removed]) —a program that provides emergency crisis support to LGBTQ+ youth considering suicide. This lifesaving federal program was created in 2022 with strong bipartisan support and signed into law during the President’s first administration.

These services are not abstract. They are real lifelines that have helped countless young people navigate moments of deep pain and uncertainty. In fact, The Trevor Project currently responds to nearly half of the volume coming through the 988 LGBTQ+ Lifeline, offering tailored support from trained counselors who understand what LGBTQ+ young people are going through. That will end after July 17.

While Trevor’s 24/7 Classic Crisis Services ([link removed]) are separate from the 988 Lifeline and remain fully operational—thanks to community support from organizations, foundations, and individual supporters like you—the sudden elimination of the 988 LGBTQ+ Lifeline will cause undo harm to LGBTQ+ young people in crisis.

We know this news may be unsettling—and we want to reassure you: Trevor isn’t going anywhere. Our work just became more critical now than ever.

Congress still has the power to reverse this decision. In the meantime, we’ll continue doing everything in our power to protect and support LGBTQ+ youth nationwide. We’re here for every LGBTQ+ young person who needs support—today, tomorrow, and in the weeks and months ahead.
