John,
Israel’s war with Iran is worsening by the day, and the Trump administration is threatening to get the United States more and more involved — even though presidents do not have the power to declare war.
Last week, the Israeli military attacked Iran — including strikes on residential buildings — undermining nuclear agreement negotiations between the United States and Iran, and moving closer to a full-blown regional war in the Middle East.
At first, Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed the U.S. was not involved in the strikes, but Donald Trump soon claimed he knew all about it ahead of time, and has since threatened Iran with U.S. intervention on behalf of Israel.
Since then, Iran has retaliated, and the two countries have exchanged strikes on the cities of Tel Aviv and Tehran over the last six days, killing nearly 250 people in total so far. We cannot let Israel drag us into this, John.
As Rep. Rashida Tlaib pointed out, Trump, many Republicans, and even some war-hungry Democrats in the pockets of corporate defense contractors are chomping at the bit to send us into another war. Despite a lack of evidence, they’re trying to push the same ‘weapons of mass destruction’ narrative they used to justify the Iraq War, which was an unnecessary disaster based on lies that killed millions.
War hawks have been making these claims about Iran’s nuclear capabilities for decades, and we know why: weapons manufacturers and the rest of the military-industrial complex rely on bipartisan warmongering so our taxpayer dollars can line their pockets with profits. Just this year, Lockheed Martin has given:
🚀 $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee
🚀 $135,000 to the DSCC, DCCC, & DNC
🚀 $125,000 to NRSC, NRCC, & RNC
Every member of Congress — especially every Democrat — should oppose U.S. involvement, funding, weapons, or troops fighting another endless war in the Middle East.
This is another U.S. and Israel-backed attempt at regime change in the Middle East that risks all-out regional war and chaos and has no support from the American people.
Rep. Ro Khanna and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie have introduced a measure under the War Powers Resolution of 1973 to prohibit U.S. involvement & taxpayer funding for Netanyahu’s reckless and desperate war with Iran — and the rest of our bloc are original cosponsors.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
