John,

The progress we’ve made to build a more inclusive democracy is a testament to generations of heroes.

That includes ordinary Americans like my late friend John Lewis, who marched in Selma, endured billy clubs and tear gas, and put his body on the line for the right to vote. Without courageous champions like him, Congress would not have passed the Voting Rights Act 60 years ago this August.

But despite the profound sacrifices of people like John, some politicians today are still trying to roll back our hard-won progress on equal rights and equal representation.

They’re working to take power away from their fellow citizens — even when it means violating the promises of the Voting Rights Act. They’re drawing district lines that deny communities of color the opportunity to elect the candidates of their choice. They’re making it harder to vote in ways that disproportionately hurt seniors and anyone who works hard to make ends meet.

And they think they’ve got a better chance of clinging to power if they get to choose their voters instead of the other way around.

That’s why groups like All On The Line are fighting for a truly representative democracy. They are the strategic force against racial and partisan gerrymandering, with a systematic 10 Year Plan to have the fairest maps possible in 2032. They work to protect the right to vote so our leaders can’t escape accountability.

And they are counting on you, John, to power this work. I’m counting on you, too. Will you join me in supporting All On The Line today, and help build an America that is stronger because it better lives up to our more fundamental values?

With support from people like you, the fair maps movement is standing up for the promise of democracy.

In court, All On The Line’s affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, has successfully fought to uphold the Voting Rights Act and won new district maps with new opportunities for equal representation. Like in Alabama, which elected two Black members of Congress for the first time in history in 2024 after voters fought for and won a new map that reflected their voices.

And All On The Line campaign’s work — including organizing citizens to advocate against gerrymandered maps and holding map manipulators accountable — has resulted in what The New York Times called “the fairest House map of the last 40 years.”

But too many Americans still live under manipulated maps that deny them a real voice in their state legislatures or in Congress. And we face ongoing threats to basic fairness in our elections.

This spring, House conservatives launched one of the most striking attacks on voting rights in decades. The SAVE Act would make it harder to vote by forcing people to show a costly and burdensome amount of proof of their citizenship in person before gaining access to the ballot box.

The new requirements could disenfranchise millions of Americans who can’t afford a passport, can’t take time off work to visit an elections office, or don’t have a birth certificate that matches their married name.

Think about that. How can any elected official rationalize making it harder for people to vote? How can they penalize people because they don’t have money? That’s contrary to who we are. That’s not what we believe. That’s not why people like John Lewis marched in Selma.

In the United States of America, we should have no patience and no tolerance for gerrymandered maps or vote-suppressing laws that aim at silencing our fellow citizens.

I’m asking you to fight back with a grassroots investment in the All On The Line campaign as we keep working to end gerrymandering and stop legislation that tries to silence people’s voices. Together, we can strengthen our democracy. Donate $15 or more, and let’s rise to meet this moment.

Thank you,

Barack Obama
