John,
I want to share my story with you today—a journey from fleeing violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to helping other refugees rebuild their lives in America.
In November 1996, my family escaped the political turmoil and violence that plagued our homeland. Like so many refugees, we left behind everything we knew, seeking only safety and survival. For the next 18 years, a refugee camp in Uganda became my world—a place where I learned what it truly means to wait, to survive, and to hope for a better future.
In 2015, my life changed forever. Through the International Rescue Committee and the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, I was resettled in the United States. For the first time in nearly two decades, I could build a future beyond just surviving. I could pursue education, find stability, and live with dignity.

The refugee resettlement program didn't just give me a new address—it opened doors to dreams I had only glimpsed from afar in the refugee camp. With the IRC's support, I was able to pursue my educational goals and build a career in humanitarian services.
Today, working at the IRC in Kansas, I have the privilege of supporting other refugees and immigrants as they rebuild their lives in America—people who arrive just as I did, with little more than hope and determination. Every day, I witness the same transformation that I experienced, as people who have endured the unimaginable begin to thrive.
John, this is what I wish more people understood: Refugees are dreamers, builders, and strong workers who arrive with hearts full of gratitude and hands ready to build new lives.
The United States has been a beacon of hope for so many, and organizations like the IRC make that hope a reality. When you support refugee resettlement, you're not just giving aid—you're helping create new beginnings, new strength, and new stories.
Thank you for being part of this journey—not just mine, but the journey of countless refugees who are writing new chapters of their lives right now.
With deep gratitude,
Dede S. Shimiyimana
