All those streaming videos and movies are polluting the planet. Why? Because they are powered by fossil fuels

Dear Green American,

Our Hang Up on Fossil Fuels campaign continues! Thanks to Green Americans like you taking action, the three big telecommunications companies—Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T—have made significant progress on switching to renewable energy.

But far more work needs to be done to green the energy of the communications sector that we all rely on every day to text, stream, and stay connected – starting with Comcast.

Comcast is not just a major cable and internet company, but also owns NBC, Bravo, Peacock, and Universal (the makers of movie hits like Wicked), and earned 2024 revenues of over $123 billion.

Unfortunately, that large entertainment footprint comes with a huge climate change footprint. In 2024, Comcast reported using 6 million megawatts of energy (the equivalent of over ½ million cars on the road) with less than 10% of that coming from renewables. The urgency of climate change requires Comcast accelerate action on renewable energy.

After thousands of Green Americans reached out to the company they recently announced they are at 27% clean energy. But, there’s a big catch – less than half of that is from renewables. The rest is from “carbon-free” sources like nuclear, biomass, and hydro power. Those aren’t green.

Nuclear power poses grave risks from accidents and creates waste that remains radioactive for thousands of years. Giant hydropower dams harm ecosystems and fish. Biomass often comes from burning forests for power, which is worse for the climate than coal.

Instead of false solutions, Comcast and other companies need to move to truly 100% renewable energy from wind and solar, they also need to ensure that as they make the transition to renewable energy, energy justice is included. The communities most harmed by fossil fuels must benefit the most from clean energy and workers worldwide mining rare earth minerals must be protected.

Join us in telling Comcast and other communication companies to switch to 100% renewable energy and to ensure Energy Equity.
