Coalition Update

June 18, 2025

It’s happening at the front door

Our front desk has evolved into more than a place to check in. It’s become a connection point, a resource hub and sometimes even a lifeline.

We see between 30 and 50 people a day, a number that has grown significantly in recent months. They come here for a cup of coffee or hot water for noodles, for hygiene kits and supplies to stay safe, for a spot to get warm and dry when it’s pouring rain and freezing cold.

Recently, our community opened applications for a new round of emergency rental assistance. Because we had the front desk open, and we had computers and staff support, many individuals were able to apply. Six people who had been living outdoors were accepted into the NeighborWorks Alaska program. They now have support through case management — and housing.

Bringing national insights home

The country’s largest gathering focused on homelessness and healthcare took place last month in Baltimore, and Ziona Brownlow, our healthcare integration director, was there.

The National Health Care for the Homeless Conference and Policy Symposium showcased innovative programs from across the country, frameworks that focused on meeting people where they are, and highlighted the importance of building community to achieve this work.

Thanks to Ziona for keeping our community engaged in this work!

Alaska Housing Summit 2025

The Alaska Housing Summit is set for Aug. 19-20, and it promises to be an exciting and productive two days. We are co-hosting the event with the Alaska Coalition on Housing and Homelessness.

While the agenda is being developed, a featured guest is already lined up: Chief Seattle Club, a Native-led housing and human services agency. You won’t want to miss hearing about their success story and learning how we can bring pieces of their approach to Anchorage.

CoC update

Advocacy by the people

A longtime Anchorage advocacy group of — and for — those who have lived experience in homelessness is again standing up for those who are unhoused.

The Homeless Resource Advocacy Council — described as “an autonomous body providing legitimate voice and representation for individuals with lived experience of homelessness” — met in early June at Mountain View Library.

“Our purpose is to be the authentic voice of what is and what is not helpful,” said Roger Branson, acting chair and one of the early members of HRAC, as it is known.

Data update

A plan for unhoused neighbors to simply become neighbors

We are more than a year into our community’s five-year strategic plan on homelessness, and a framework for success is in place. We’ve proven that person-centered, rapid rehousing programs work, including for those who have lived outdoors for years. Those who get housed, generally stay housed. Street outreach is building trust and connection with those sleeping in encampments and vehicles. New cross-sector partnerships are forming to support this work. The voices of those with lived expertise are being elevated to strengthen services. We’ve made real progress.

Our dashboard of results will be updated twice a year. Click here to see how our community is doing so far. Check back later this summer for the next update.
