In honor of the Juneteenth holiday, CLASP is proud to announce the publication of a new brief by Parker Gilkesson Davis, senior policy analyst on the Public Benefits Justice team. “Land, Labor, Liberation: A Juneteenth Reflection on Racism in American Agriculture” looks at the history of agricultural injustice experienced by Black and immigrant farm workers and offers bold policy ideas that center the dignity, equity, and value of all historically marginalized communities.
Even as we highlight Parker’s work and lift up previous Juneteenth reflections by CLASP staff, we are mindful of the fact that we are celebrating the holiday as immigrant communities and other vulnerable communities in our country face intimidation, fear, and threats to their well-being. Since the beginning of the second Trump Administration, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs and initiatives at the state and federal level, on college campuses, and in corporate boardrooms have been dismantled and devalued. CLASP’s Deputy Executive Director of Racial Equity, Eddie Martin, Jr., has written extensively about the recent attacks on DEIA, and we encourage you to read his work as well as Parker’s brief and the blogs listed below.
Juneteenth reminds us that the struggle for Black liberation is inseparable from the fight for a just and equitable nation. Uplifting Black freedom is not just an act of remembrance—it is a path forward for collective justice and commitment to building a future where every community thrives.
