Howdy comrades!
We've been busy as always since our last update. Our crawfish boil fundraiser at the end of May was a huge success -- we raised more than enough money to cover registration fees for our delegates to the DSA national convention this year, and had a great time doing it. Members of our chapter joined the No Kings protest to support a nationwide show of working-class anger at the drastic abuses of power by the US government. Representatives from a rapid-response support network in Houston hosted a scouts training for DSA members to help us report ICE enforcement actions around the city. And at our June general body meeting we elected a new Communications Secretary and a new Endorsements Committee officer-- congratulations to these incoming chapter leaders!
Read on for what is coming up the rest of the month!

June 18th and 20th- Boycott Avelo events
|
Earlier this year, little-known local company Avelo Airlines agreed to become the first corporate airline to provide deportation flights for ICE, describing the contract as “too valuable not to pursue”. Join us as we ramp up our boycott campaign and help make sure this decision costs them more than they can afford. The banner painting is today at Bohemeo's, and the drop is on the 20th. Sign up below!

Also happening today: join our Socialism 101 event to learn the basics of socialism, how it applies to the world, and how we use it to fight for all the working class. This is a great event for new or interested members. If you know nothing about socialism, we’ll give you the basics to be able to engage in political discussion with other members and about DSA work; if you are familiar with socialism, come participate to help others learn and expand your own understanding as well!

Two socials: Board game night at Coral Sword, and queer solidarity in Montgomery County!
|
Building community is more important to the socialist movement right now than it's ever been, and we have two events this month where you can come out and meet comrades old and new.
Saturday the 21st is our monthly game night at the Coral Sword cafe on the southeast side. They have food and drinks, as well as an impressive library of board games on-site (but feel free to bring your own!). Then, on the 27th, we're hosting a queer solidarity social in Montgomery County at Mezze 1. There will be hookah, hummus, and community building; we’d love to see you there!

June 21st and 22nd- Immigrant Justice Canvass
|
Our campaign will be leading two more canvasses this month: one in Gragg Park, and one at the Esplanade park off of Navigation Boulevard. We'll inform our fellow Houstonians of their rights and resources in the face of Trump’s assault on immigrant communities, and ask anyone who's able to get involved in the work with us. You'll join an experienced canvasser, so no worries if it's your first time. Snacks and water will be provided!

June 23rd- Poli-Ed event on the US Constitution
|
Next Monday at 7pm, the Political Education Committee is hosting another Red Square discussion; this time on the U.S. Constitution, and how it's set the foundation for the fundamentally undemocratic structure of our state. Learn how it's been used to oppress indigenous, black, brown, and migrant struggles for equality, and how it created the conditions for Trump's ascent to power, from where he threatens to provoke a constitutional crisis.
Join us as we figure out how to face the current moment and win a real democracy ruled by and for the working class. Featuring special guest Cliff Connolly of DSA's Marxist Unity Group!

Volunteer opportunity: Alabama Gardens 🌱
|
We recently started collaborating with the leadership of a few community gardens in the 3rd ward on distribution and food security planning. Between Alabama Gardens, the TSU Community Farm and others, enough food is produced to feed many more people in the community than are currently being served, but they need help -- contact [email protected] for more information if you're interested in community gardening and food justice in your city.

Are you interested in getting more involved? Fill out the form below and we'll reach out to talk about the chapter.
|
Are you ready to join the largest socialist organization in the US? Use the link below to commit to paying dues and become a member of DSA. We are growing the labor movement, electing socialists to office, and building a mass movement to build a better world.
If you can not pay right now, use our sliding scale or email [email protected] to ask about a dues waiver application.
