Edwin Osvaldo Manriquez was accused of pulling the trigger on a paintball gun and dispersing multiple rounds on the afternoon of June 9 near the Federal Building on Los Angeles Street in downtown L.A., according to an affidavit filed by the FBI in court. An officer with the Federal Protective Service was hit. The service is an arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that protects federal buildings. “The paintballs hit him on the head, left ear, left cheek, left neck and left shoulder,” the affidavit says; the officer wore a helmet and protective gear. Manriquez was charged with assault on a federal officer. The officers were stationed at the main entrance of the Federal Building to ensure protesters didn’t enter the structure, the affidavit says. The suspect is accused of pulling the trigger while in the passenger seat of a white 2005 Infiniti G35 coupe. After firing the paintball gun, the suspect allegedly “threw a hand sign with his left hand while still holding the paintball gun in his right hand,” the affidavit says. Both the suspected shooter and the driver were wearing face coverings. Los Angeles Times Charges announced in freeway clash, Apple Store looting and other crimes during LA protests More criminal charges were announced Tuesday in connection with violence that broke out during largely peaceful Los Angeles ICE raid protests, including a clash in which rocks were thrown from a freeway overpass and a California Highway Patrol SUV was lit on fire in the downtown area. The charges announced at a news conference Tuesday included four felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer, arson and vandalism against a 30-year-old man accused in the June 8 altercation on a 101 Freeway overpass. During a demonstration in the area, some people walked onto the freeway and others gathered on an overpass. Video showed objects being thrown at law enforcement vehicles stopped on the freeway as officers tried to clear people who were blocking traffic. An anonymous tip led officers to a man suspected of throwing a large rock at police vehicles and lighting an object on fire before throwing it at the CHP SUV under the overpass. Adam Palermo was charged with four felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and one felony count each of arson and vandalism. The man's social media account appeared to show images from the chaotic scene, prosecutors said. He faces up to nine years and eight months in state prison, if convicted as charged. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf. In a statement, Bass said after "successful crime prevention and suppression efforts," the curfew would be lifted effective Tuesday night. On June 10, Bass instituted the curfew with support from local enforcement and other leaders after protests against immigration operations turned violent, resulting in businesses being looted and the destruction of public property. The initial curfew was set from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and covered about one square mile of the downtown area from the 5 Freeway, the 110 Freeway, and the 10 Freeway and ended where the 5 Freeway and the 110 Freeway merge.
