BREAKING NEWS:
"New York City mayoral candidate Brad Lander arrested at immigration court"
– The Guardian
Friend, what happened in New York City today should alarm every single one of us.
Brad Lander – our city comptroller and a mayoral candidate – was arrested by ICE agents outside an immigration court for simply standing up for a neighbor. He asked to see a judicial warrant. They pinned him to a wall and arrested him.
This is a government striking fear into its own people, friend.
This is what happens when a government’s power is used to punish dissent.
This is not the rule of law – this is the erosion of it.
And it's not just Brad. Just days ago, Sen. Alex Padilla – a sitting U.S. senator and the son of Mexican immigrants – was forcibly dragged out of a press conference and handcuffed for just trying to ask a question. And Rep. LaMonica McIver was just recently indicted for defending Newark Mayor Ras Baraka during an altercation at an ICE detention center.
Let us be clear: This is not business as usual. This is a coordinated campaign of intimidation meant to silence those who stand up for immigrants, for fairness, and for justice. It's meant to show you that no one is safe – not even our elected officials.
But Letitia James didn't run for attorney general to stay silent. She ran to protect the people of New York and to protect our democracy. And in the face of these blatant acts of injustice, she is determined to fight back – because if they can come for elected officials in broad daylight, they will come for anyone.
