A few weeks ago, the House passed Trump's so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill"—a budget reconciliation bill that has moved on to the Senate—and buried in the fine print was a massive giveaway to the gun lobby: a provision that completely deregulates firearm silencers, also known as suppressors. These devices muffle the sound of gunfire, making it harder for law enforcement and bystanders to identify where shots are coming from.

And now, Senate Republicans have taken it a step further and added language into the bill that would also deregulate short-barreled rifles and shotguns like those used in mass shootings and high profile crimes, as well as other weapons disguised as other objects—like umbrella guns and cane guns. If the Senate passes this bill, it would make it easier than ever to to get these dangerous and deadly weapons. It's outrageous. And it only benefits the gun industry's profits.

Silencers, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, and other easily concealed firearms have been heavily regulated for nearly a century under the National Firearms Act of 1934. But now, House Republicans are gutting those protections—eliminating registration requirements, background checks, and even the $200 tax added to the purchase of these items.

Removing silencers and other firearms from the NFA would:

• Make the public less safe while making it more difficult for law enforcement to investigate and solve crimes.
• Make it even easier for the gun industry to market, sell, and profit off weapons that have long been considered too dangerous for civilian ownership and that have, time and again, endangered communities across the U.S.

Let's be clear: We've already seen the deadly consequences of these firearms. Silencers were used in the mass shootings committed in Monterey Park and Virginia Beach. Short-barreled rifles were used in the Dayton, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Nashville mass shootings. And the perpetrators of the Santa Fe and Columbine shootings had short-barreled shotguns.

We can't let them win. Not now. Not ever.
