Yesterday, NYC Comptroller and mayoral candidate, Brad Lander, was physically restrained and detained by federal agents while accompanying a defendant from a Manhattan courtroom. Lander, who had been observing immigration hearings as a volunteer, asked federal agents to see their judicial warrant — a lawful, peaceful act — as authorities tried to detain the defendant to which federal agents responded to Lander with handcuffs, force, and an accusation of assaulting and impeding federal officers. Lander says he did nothing wrong and that he was peacefully observing legal proceedings, a claim confirmed when he was released hours later without charges. Brian Tyler Cohen sat down with Lander yesterday to discuss his arrest. Lander calls the arrest part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to intimidate immigrant families. As Lander puts it: “Donald Trump is trying to strike fear and provoke conflict.” This is about choosing cruelty on purpose. Watch now.
