The role of the city in promoting Black economic prosperity
Small businesses have been touted as the backbone of the US economy; they also play a crucial role in uplifting their local communities. Black-owned small businesses face numerous challenges getting off the ground, leading to a stark disparity between the percentage of Black-owned businesses and the Black population in cities. But there are plenty of steps city officials can take to help remove the systemic barriers to Black entrepreneurship.

The Role of the City in Promoting Black Economic Prosperity is a project that explores how cities can boost local economic prosperity by advancing Black wealth building. This body of work includes an overview of the challenges small business owners face, their disproportionate effects on Black small business owners, and recommendations to advance Black economic prosperity.

Learn more about what it takes for Black-owned businesses to thrive in their local economies and other examples of how officials can support Black Americans in their communities.
