** We showed up at No Kings and an ICE office this weekend. We won.

On Saturday, we showed our power. At last count, 100 000 people participated in our march from Dolores Park to Civic Center, with an inspirational rally at Civic Center Plaza and plenty of great photos of the event. We bolstered a day of national resistance that saw millions of people on the streets standing up against fascism. Photos of the event are at Pro Bono Photo. ([link removed])

At the same time, we were able to mobilize for two straight days to join Bay Resistance at the ICE office at 478 Tehama, and we were able to prevent any detentions from happening there.

This weekend we showed a true impact, both in messaging and in the physical protection of our communities from harm.

But this fight will not be over soon. Since last week, we’ve seen mounting displays of fascism from ICE goons and MAGA supporters. Senator Alex Padilla was detained by agents at a DHS press conference. Yesterday, NYC Comptroller Brad Lander was detained by masked individuals claiming to be ICE while doing court accompaniment for an immigrant and demanding to see their warrant. Rep. LaMonica Iver was charged for interfering with ICE officers. And most horribly, on the morning of No Kings, four Minnesota lawmakers were shot, two fatally, by a MAGA gunman.

We know that the threat of unjust ICE enforcement, kidnapping people off the streets, as well as the associated violence and repression, are going to continue. And we need to stand up to them and keep protecting our communities. This means we need to be brave, but even more so we need to be organized, disciplined, and persistent.

Here are the things that you can do right now.
* Join our new rapid-response Signal group. Signal is an end-to-end encrypted messaging app, the safest on the market. We will post emergency protests from trusted partners there. This group was indispensable to our ICE office mobilization this week, and we encourage you to join. We are also working on a text-messaging based group, but this will take more time, so if you want to be apprised of rapid-response information right now, please join this Signal group ([link removed]) .

* If you have loved ones in the military, share this Know-Your-Rights information ([link removed]) in case they are compelled into unconstitutional actions.
* Call our Members of Congress ([link removed]) to demand that they stand up for Senator Padilla and themselves, and use the procedural tools at their disposal to stop legislation until justice is restored.
* Renew the call for our federal, state and local officials to oppose the reopening of FCI Dublin.

+ Call your State and Local officials. ([link removed])
* Join our immigration team to learn about accompaniment and other strategies to protect our communities. We organize chiefly on Slack, so respond to this email if you would like to be invited.
* Become a legal observer. The National Lawyers Guild San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is looking for volunteers. Whether or not you are an attorney, you can become a Legal Observer or a Court Watcher. Sign up here ([link removed]) if you are interested in any of those opportunities and they will reach out when they have trainings.
+ If you are an attorney licensed in California, you can assist with criminal defense of protesters who are charged with protest-related offenses. You can also sign up to be trained on how to assist persons who are visited by the FBI.

The Big Ugly Bill Update: Phone Bank to increase GOP opposition
------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, as the Big Ugly Bill makes its way through the Senate, the changes the Senate has introduced only makes it worse. It still makes deep cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other services, still enables Trump’s power grabs, and still creates an economic time-bomb.
But the good news is that this bill is still vulnerable. Since the service cuts it provides run so deep, it is a third rail for many red-state Senators. And the deficit it creates is also giving pause to some Senators. We need to let voters in red states know what their Senators are about to do and get them to raise holy hell about it.

Final Call to Action on the People’s Budget
------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor Lurie released a Proposed Budget document on May 30. Now, two weeks later, the devastating cuts to vital services ([link removed]) are becoming clearer. We agree with the People’s Budget Coalition ([link removed]) ’s view that an equitable and just budget is a matter of life and death.

One week before the Board of Supervisors make recommendations to the Mayor, the people’s Budget Coalition has two priorities:

1. Tell the Budget Committee to fund communities, not a new jail. ([link removed])
2. Show up on June 23rd at Supervisors’ budget Committee hearings to take back City Hall.

The Sheriff's Department reopened Jail #3 Annex in San Bruno in Fall 2023 to respond to a rising jail population. Originally temporary, the annex—now housing up to 372 people and is being budgeted as a long-term facility, effectively turning it into a new permanent jail. This has caused budget increases in sheriff overtime by roughly $30 MILLION.

At the same time the Mayor is slashing funding for the very programs that keep people safe and housed. Nonprofits that provide legal aid, reentry support, housing assistance, and violence prevention are being gutted.

This Budget isn’t pro-public safety, it’s pro-incarceration.

Decades of research prove that stable housing, youth support, mental health care, and accessible legal aid reduce crime far more effectively—and far more cheaply—than jails and massive increases to overtime pay. Our demand to Supervisors is that they must reject a budget that grows jail infrastructure while starving public safety programs that actually work.

The Mayor cares what people are saying, but only if he hears it loudly and often from both the Budget Committee and our protests. Flood the Budget Committee voicemail inboxes and convince them to fight. Your phone calls matter.

Call Mayor Lurie and your Supervisor ([link removed]) and demand they fund communities, not a new jail.

Also, we need your public comment on Monday, June 23rd at 10:00AM at the Board of Supervisors Budget hearings. This is our last chance to fight back and convince the Board of Supervisors’ Budget Committee to vote against the proposed cuts. Your voice is needed, let's flood the public comment to let them know just how devastating these cuts would be for our community.

All hearings will take place at City Hall in the Board Chambers, room 250. Get in line on the second floor with your prepared two minute comment on what’s important to you. Arrive at 11:30 AM to make some noise and reclaim City Hall at 12:00 PM. People’s Budget will be visiting offices on the 3rd and 4th floors.

** Ending Child Homelessness in San Francisco
------------------------------------------------------------
On Monday, June 9, Faith In Action Bay Area Unhoused Family Leaders, the Coalition on Homelessness, and Supervisor Jackie Fielder held a press conference to release a groundbreaking new report: “Ending Child Homelessness in San Francisco: A Budget Proposal from Homeless Families." ([link removed]) This data-driven report demonstrates that with a targeted investment of $66 million, San Francisco can end the crisis of children sleeping on the streets.

More than 2,000 families are currently experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. In 2018, the Coalition on Homelessness helped craft and pass Proposition C, a measure designed to address the city’s homelessness crisis by significantly increasing funding for housing and services, with a special focus on families.

Now, Mayor Lurie has proposed diverting the $89 million in Prop C funds earmarked for housing to instead fund homeless shelters—a move that would block families from accessing permanent housing. Faith In Action Bay Area’s new report offers a smarter alternative: a solution that would cost less than 1% of the city’s budget and reduce monthly costs from $6,660 per family for temporary shelter to just $2,734 for permanent housing.

The citizens of SF need to amplify the voices of our immigrant and unhoused community members, especially our traumatized children, and demand that families have access to permanent housing opportunities.

Call Mayor Lurie and your Supervisors ([link removed]) and ask them to overturn the 90-Day eviction policy and implement Faith In Action’s alternative plan for housing.

Oppose Medi-Cal cuts targeting undocumented Californians
------------------------------------------------------------
From our immigrant leaders of Faith in Action Bay Area:

We invite you to join us to send a message to oppose Governor Gavin Newsom’s new budget proposal to cut Medi-Cal funding and restrict healthcare access for undocumented Californians.

Newsom’s proposed cuts target many of us, your undocumented neighbors. We are an important part of our community and we collectively pay $8.5 billion in state and local taxes, yet we are excluded from all federal safety net programs. Now, Governor Newsom wants to rollback a historic commitment to health care access for all Californians. We deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and have access to functioning state services just like everybody else. It represents a huge step backwards, because of the public health impact and because it’s morally wrong to leave so many of us to suffer without medical care.

The contrast of No Kings weekend: Truth vs. Dare
------------------------------------------------------------
Truth was on full display this past weekend as millions of Americans showed up to their local No Kings protest in support of democracy, truth, freedom, and the American way.

It was a contrast and a rebuke to Trump’s birthday military parade. The regime’s claimed attendance was obvious bluster—just compare his sparse bleachers to our packed streets.

In the millions of faces that filled thousands of streets this weekend, Trump saw the power of peaceful people organizing—and it scares him. He knows as well as we do that nobody showed up to his self-glorification parade, we the people showed up to denounce the regime’s fascist actions.
