Dear SPUC supporter,
Yesterday was a dark day for the UK. And this week isn’t over – we still have the vote on assisted suicide coming up on Friday.
The fight on the decriminalisation amendment passed by MPs yesterday isn’t over. We will soon be providing you with resources to lobby members of the House of Lords, who will have a chance to scrutinise and amend the Bill. Many Peers have already indicated that they will not allow this rushed, undemocratic overhaul of abortion laws to go by without a challenge.
Today, I’d ask you to take a quick action and email your MP. We have updated our tool so that it shows which way your MP voted yesterday. If your MP voted against the amendment, thank them and urge them to continue speaking up for the unborn.
If your MP voted for the amendment, please respectfully tell them how disappointed you are that unborn babies were stripped of legal protection, especially after only a two-hour debate, with little notice.
I know you will be feeling rightfully very angry and upset if your MP voted for the amendment, but please be as respectful as you can – any changes made in the Lords will come back for MPs to vote on, so it’s important to keep lines of communication open.
Write to your MP (decriminalisation) ([link removed])
We also need to turn our attention to the expected vote on Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults Bill on Friday.
Please urgently contact your MP and ask him/her to attend the debate and vote against the Bill on Friday. This is particularly important if your MP voted against in November – numbers are very tight, so it may well come down to turnout on the day.
Write to your MP (assisted suicide) ([link removed])
The result yesterday was dreadful and has shocked us all, but let’s press on for these final few days before the key vote on assisted suicide. It’s been a long campaign, but one in which momentum has been steadily moving in our direction. It is becoming more and more unclear that this is a bad bill, badly conducted, that will put the vulnerable in huge danger and fundamentally change our society.
Thank you for campaigning with us.
