Dear Supporter,
Today, I’m going to the High Court.
That’s because Campaign for National Park have joined a vital legal case to clarify how public bodies must apply the law that protects England’s National Parks and National Landscapes. This isn’t just about one development, it’s about the future of how decisions are made across all 44 of England’s Protected Landscapes.
Eighteen months ago, after years of determined campaigning, the law was changed. Now, public bodies are required to actively further the conservation and enhancement of Protected Landscapes. This wasn’t meant to be symbolic; it was supposed to change how decisions are made, from housing to water, roads to access.
But right now, that law is being tested. So, we’ve intervened in a vital Judicial Review to make sure this new protection delivers for our landscapes, wildlife, and future generations.
Legal action is never our first step, but it can be a powerful and necessary one. We intervene carefully and strategically, when we believe it will lead to long-term change. For example, earlier this year we took on our first legal case in support of this law, which is now shortlisted for the National Campaigning Awards.
Today will be a landmark moment. One of the very first times this law will be properly tested in court. The outcome could set a legal precedent for how all public bodies - from ministers to planning authorities to water companies - must treat our National Parks and National Landscapes going forward.
This is about more than words. It's about action.
With your support, we’ve been able to act. But legal action does incur costs, and our Legal Fighting Fund needs replenishing.
Every donation helps us stand up for our National Parks and the laws that protect them. Will you donate today to help us see this case through?
Your support helps us protect the wild places we all love, now and for the future.
Thank you.
