Without hesitation, Trump mused aloud about reshaping the exclusive G7 into a broader G8 or G9. His vision—though jarring to democratic sensibilities—entertained the inclusion of states long critiqued for their autocratic underpinnings. Both Russia and China stand apart from the G7’s liberal-democratic character, yet Trump seemed undeterred by ideological dissonance.
Describing Russia’s 2014 ejection as a “tremendous misstep,” Trump revisited the historical pivot point when Moscow’s annexation of Crimea led to its political ostracization.
