Friend,
Pride Month honors the LGBTQ+ trailblazers who bravely fought for our rights throughout history. While Pride is for celebrating the joy, authenticity, and freedom that every LGBTQ+ person deserves, this month also recognizes how far we’ve come, and how far we have left to go. We must never forget that Pride began as a protest.
By now, it’s no secret that the same anti-democracy, anti-freedom lawmakers working to restrict the right to vote are the same lawmakers attacking the LGBTQ+ community. Just earlier this year, Georgia's General Assembly voted to pass SB 1, which bans transgender students from participating in school sports, and Governor Kemp signed it into law in April. Here’s the rundown:
- SB 1 is bad for ALL girls, transgender or not — because anyone who loses can bring a lawsuit and subject countless young girls to invasive exams as a result of being ‘too good’ at a sport.
- Proponents of SB 1 have yet to find a single impacted Georgian to advocate for in favor of banning transgender participation in sports.
- The bill would require extensive testing to verify a child’s sex. The research shows that the testing could exceed $10,000 per athlete, and would become a major financial burden on student athletes, their families, and athletic programs as a whole.
- This bill takes power away from local schools and athletic associations from making decisions about their local athletic programs.
Forcing trans students to use locker rooms and bathrooms that don’t match their gender puts them at increased risk for harassment and assault. Plus, we can’t ignore the fact that restricting access to bathrooms is sheer government overreach — and nearly impossible to enforce.
Right wing extremists are waging relentless attacks on LGBTQ+ folks right here in Georgia and across the entire country. But Fair Fight Action’s vision for Georgia — and American democracy as a whole — includes everyone. That means making sure our laws protect our gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans, and nonbinary neighbors, not target them.
Fair Fight Action proudly stands with our friends at Georgia Equality. When our fights are interconnected, we must work hand-in-hand to build up our democracy together. Split a donation between Fair Fight Action and Georgia Equality now >>
Georgia Equality’s mission is to advance fairness, safety, and opportunity for LGBTQ+ communities and their allies throughout the state.
Through the Equality Foundation of Georgia, Georgia Equality helps to conduct voter registration and educational activities, provide information to decision makers, and work to organize and mobilize LGBTQ+ residents and allies to advance equality in all communities across the state.
When we have the freedom to make our voices heard at the ballot box, we have more power to protect, restore, and advance LGBTQ+ rights.

We cannot let these attacks rain on our pride parade. So for Pride Month and beyond, continue showing up fully and authentically!
In solidarity,
