Hi John,
I’m Candice with 350 Action, and today, I’m excited to share our brand new
campaign with you: Our Cities, Our Roots.
With Donald Trump in the White House and both the House and Senate in
Republican control, the GOP is operating at a breakneck speed to push its
far-right agenda at the federal level — including ripping away clean air
protections and progress we’ve made to address the climate crisis.
Our Cities, Our Roots is our electoral campaign effort to go back to the
roots of local government to continue pushing climate goals at the city
level. In 2025, we have the opportunity to leverage ambitious climate
goals in 5 key cities across the United States that are holding mayoral
races this year.
[ [link removed] ]Before I tell you more about our plans, will you take our pledge to let
us know you’re a climate voter and stay in the loop with our new campaign?
There’s good reason to turn our attention to the local level.
Cities are where some of the most consequential climate legislation gets
its start. Under Mayor Brandon Johnson, Chicago recently became the
largest city in the country to switch all city-owned buildings to
renewable energy, cutting their carbon footprint by 290,000 metric tons
each year. It’s their first step toward ensuring all buildings in the city
are powered by 100% renewables by 2035.
Cities influence states, which then influence regions and countries. For
example, San Francisco’s climate action and clean energy initiatives have
influenced California, which has influenced the West Coast and the entire
nation.
Getting climate activists to become climate voters to elect climate
leaders gets groundbreaking legislation — like New York’s Climate
Superfund — passed into law.
Taking action, winning elections, and making progress in our cities can
have a clear ripple effect. So here’s what we’re going to do through our
new campaign:
* Send mayoral candidates running in races across the country a
scorecard to fill out in order to gauge their commitment to bold
climate legislation if they are elected.
* Once we receive their responses, 350 Action will create voter guides
to educate voters on where their candidates stand on important issues,
including climate justice.
* We will also hold events in cities where we think we can make the
biggest difference to engage, educate, and turn out voters.
* After the mayoral races are over, we will move into accountability
mode and monitor winning candidates that we endorsed or profiled to
ensure they are holding up their pledge and have a plan in place to
implement their goals.
By engaging the electorate in the election of climate-focused elected
officials, we have even more opportunities to support the proliferation of
justly sourced and implemented real renewable energy while speeding up the
transition away from climate-destroying and environmentally detrimental
fossil fuels.
But we need YOU to make Our Cities, Our Roots a success. Are you a climate
voter, John? [ [link removed] ]Sign up to stay up to date as this exciting new
