Dear Neighbor,

Over the last few weeks, dozens of San Franciscans - including a three-year-old child -were detained by federal immigration agents at an ICE Field Office during routine checkins.

These were people who were attempting to follow our legal process, abiding by the law, and were instead met with that which they feared most would happen.

This tactic from ICE traumatizes families and erodes trust in public institutions intended to serve and protect all residents.

As protestors across California and in San Francisco have mobilized in response, we saw that the National Guard and Marines were deployed in our sister city of LA.

This is a fundamental violation of our civil rights.

When I took office, I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. What we’re witnessing today is an administration that disregards our laws, our people, and the very principles of American democracy.

As a city, we’ve got your back and we’re taking action.

Last week:
-
I introduced legislation calling for the protection of immigrants, the demilitarization of civic life, and the upholding of fundamental democratic rights to peaceful protest.
-
Legislation I co-sponsored to increase funding to the Public Defender’s Immigration Defense Unit also passed last week.

I’ll continue to fight to protect your fundamental rights — because that’s what it means to be an American.

Letters of Inquiry

I was elected to serve you. To make sure you feel safe, to listen to you, to improve your quality of life.

I believe we can call out the injustice at our doorstop and take care of business here at home.

So when I saw that the

SF Chronicle reports that homeless tent encampments are down, yet 311 encampment reports are increasing, I had to ask: how is bad data impacting street conditions?

The issue lies in how 311 reports are categorized. Residents don’t have options to report issues like non-emergency drug activity, such as open-drug use or public intoxication, so they often choose “encampment” as the closest match.

This leads to misleading data. And when city departments rely on bad data, they can’t deploy the right resources to the right problems.

I’ve introduced two letters of inquiry regarding the 311 mobile app to city departments to understand:

🔹How can we improve 311 app categorization to improve data and improve efficiency in city response

🔹How can 311 be improved to increase public engagement and user experience

Pride

🏳️‍🌈✨ Join my contingent and our District 5 team as we celebrate love, liberation, and queer joy at the San Francisco Pride Parade on Sunday, June 29! 🌈🎉

The parade kicks off at 10:30 AM, and we’ll be sharing more details soon about our exact meetup time and location.

This year, we’re paying homage to the queer-coded legacy of the X-Men — a story of chosen family, resilience, and radical acceptance. Costumes aren’t mandatory, but they’re highly encouraged — pick your favorite character and come dressed to slay (or save the world)!

💖✨ All are welcome — come show your pride with District 5!

Commendation

Last week, we commended Takeshi Onishi on over 40 years as the owner of Japan Video & Media. His pioneering vision introduced anime and manga to U.S. audiences and turned his shop into a beloved cultural landmark serving generations. He's been a leader in the Japantown Merchants Association, shaping festivals that celebrated community and heritage.

Constituent Concerns
Win of the Week: Permits, Play, and Parks: A Quick Assist

This week, we helped clear the way for some much-needed summer fun. After a D5 parent flagged repeated ranger visits to a casual kids’ soccer meetup in the Panhandle, our office worked with Rec & Park to clarify the rules.

The good news? Neighborhood kids can absolutely kick the ball around without a permit — no coaching contracts, registration forms, or red tape required.

That said, if a program involves a paid coach, advance registration, or public advertising, it’s considered an organized activity and does require a permit — including liability insurance that names the City as additionally insured. In those cases, a Summer Camp application must be submitted through Rec & Park. You can find that form

HERE .

We’ll continue to monitor the situation, but for now: the kids are playing, the rangers are informed, and the Panhandle remains a summer essential!
